WORKSOP'S Acorn Theatre has launched a series of monthly folk and roots gigs.
They began in September with Lester Simpson, of BBC Radio Derby's FolkWaves programme, and Nigel Corbett.

Shows at the Queen Street venue continue next Thursday (October 16) with the multi-instrumental talents and magical voices of the Fraser Sisters.

Jo Freya (born Fraser) and sister Fi Fraser are long established in the folk scene and their shimmering harmonies have graced classic albums by the likes of The Old Swan Band and Blowzabella.

Fi plays fiddle, clarinet and hammer dulcimer and Jo, a talented songwriter, is on saxes, clarinets and whistles.

The width of their involvement in solo work or as part of other groups reads like a Who's Who of Folk, with Token Women, Lal Waterson project, Graft and with Georgina Boyes in Coope Boyes and Simpson up there in their listings.

AcornFolk's programme fixer David Jordan said: "Our launch gig audience were wowed by Acorn emerging as a new Worksop town centre folk venue... and we've a top notch monthly line up coming up, including Eleanor McEvoy, Martin Simpson, Tams and Coope, Dick Gaughan, Chumbawamba, Coope Boyes and Simpson, Chris Wood, Carthy Waterson Parkinson and Black Umfolosi 5."

The Fraser Sisters are at The Acorn Theatre, Queen Street on Thursday, October 16, at 7.30pm. Tickets (£8 or £4 for Under 19s) from 01909 475421 between noon and 3pm Monday to Friday, 10am-12pm Saturday. Email info@acorntheatre.net or visit www.acorntheatre.net

n Clive Gregson was born and raised in Manchester but you're more likely to find him in Nashville... except when he is on tour.

And that is why you can catch this accomplished singer, musician and record producer in action in South Yorkshire.

He first attracted attention back in 1980 when now legendary band Any Trouble burst on to the music scene.

In 1985, he formed the groundbreaking partnership with Christine Collister and toured with the Richard Thompson Band. Then in 1992 he turned solo.

He is at the Rock@Maltby, Wesley Centre, Blyth Road, next Friday (Oct 17).

Tonight's guest is Martin Simpson.
