IN a perfect world a great band like the Jukes would be playing a much bigger venue than the modestly proportioned Carling Academy 2.
Indeed, Johnny is less than complimentary about his surroundings - he and the band hoped to stretch out on the much larger main stage downstairs.

But no matter, it's great to see the New Jersey veteran and his eight piece combo in such a packed an
d intimate setting, even if it does all feel a little claustrophobic at times.

We all get full value for money too, as Johnny crashes into a two hour 20 minute set packed with Jukes classics, newer songs and some tasty cover versions.

Some 40 years of experience on the road makes the whole show feel slick and effortless, with the dynamic four piece horn section providing both muscle and musical fireworks.

Favourites like I Don't Wanna Go Home and Talk To Me are warmly received, whlle the covers include Walk Away Renee, Lookin' For A Love, You Don't Know Like I Know and even the Stones' Happy. The night comes to the boil with The Fever, the peerless Hearts Of Stone and a curious encore of Surfin' USA which seems to be a bit of a band in-joke. Great show though, no question.
