Life is getting heavy for Travis

WITH more than their fair share of hits behind them Travis continue to yo-yo between venues big and small.
And, with the Scots entering their independent label phase, it is The Leadmill to which they return this autumn as part of a 13-date UK tour – and cranking up the guitars.

The affable band launched their latest phase with the limited edition EP J Smith and follow it up proper with Something Anything on September 15 on their own Red Telephone Box label.

The track lands some place between the breakthrough stomp of Good Feeling and garage band overdrive of All I Wanna Do Is Rock and sees something of a departure from the occasionally wishy-washy sound that took them to sold- out arenas.

The band say the tough beat-led grooves and guitars of Something Anything are indicative of their forthcoming album Ode To J Smith – the first to be written on electric guitar since their debut and due for release on September 29.

It was penned in five weeks and recorded in just 14 days and is being described as the sound of a band re-born, re-inspired and re-energised.

"We wanted this record to have some rough edges," confirms bassist Dougie Payne. "In the past we might have been guilty of making really beautiful things that were so smooth you almost slipped off them.

"You can't say that about this one. We really pushed ourselves. It's like prog-pop – lots happening in about three minutes."

Additional tracks on the single include Travis's cover of The Kinks classic Lola and two new songs.

The tour reaches The Leadmill on October 7. Tickets cost £18.50, from today.
