EVER wondered what the musicians think of the pieces they are playing?
The Autumn chamber music festival in Sheffield will give the answer with a series of concerts which begin next month.

Music In The Round is launching a feature called Desert Island Concert where members of Ensemble 360 will play their favourite pieces and explain why they chose them.

The series begins in the Upper Chapel on Norfolk Street on October 3 with a programme chosen by flautist Guy Eshed, who picks works by Messiaen, Debussy and Schubert.

Eshed's Schubert choice is the quintet in C which he describes as "one of the monumental works in the chamber repertoire."

He says: "Performances with double bass instead of a second cello are rare so this is a special treat."

The second Desert Island date is November 1 and features works by Mozart, Foerster, Debussy and Caplet as chosen by oboe player Adrian Wilson.

He says: "Combining classics with works that I have discovered recently, this programme illustrates perfectly what I love about being in Ensemble 360."

The final Autumn Desert Island date is December 4 and features pieces by Berwald, Schoenberg and Brahms. Pianist Tim Horton chose the programme and of the Brahms Piano Quartet in C he says: "It contains some of his most tortured music."

The Autumn festival also features performances by the Elias string quartet, a woodwind masterclass with Julie Price and the Belcea Quartet. It runs from October 3 to December 7.

MITR artistic director Peter Cropper said: "The new series of Desert Island concerts from members of Ensemble 360 is a very exciting venture.

"Each concert will have a pre-concert discussion which will enable us to get to know the players even better, both musically in terms of the programme choice and personally in terms of their likes and dislikes."

Violinist of Ensemble 360 Sara Bitlloch added: "We've always felt so privileged having such a supportive audience in Sheffield.

"So we thought it would be nice to give them a little bit more of an insight into each one of us by having a series where the programme for every concert is decided by one member of the Ensemble, presenting some of their favourite pieces of music."
