TALK about taking coals to Newcastle...
Some would say Abba Forever – the tribute band appearing at The Venue in Stocksbridge a week tomorrow – were taking their life in their hands when they first performed in the homeland of their heroes.

"We were nervous about how Swedish audiences would react to us performing as 'their' band," says founder Jane Ellis-Forshaw. "We thought they might throw rotten eggs or something."

What do you think? Post your comments below.

Fortunately Abba Forever received standing ovations and are now due to tour Sweden for the fifth time this autumn.

"Abba songs are hard to sing. The harmonies and vocal range really sort out the good performers from the mediocre." And added to Waterloo and more is non-stop dancing, dazzling costumes and a six-piece band.

Of course there are other Abba tribute bands. "We probably have to try harder than Abba themselves did because of people's expectations," says Jane, who has an uncanny likeness to Agnetha from her soprano voice and range to that legendary bum.

She launched Abba Forever nearly eight years ago and each member has studied the style and mannerisms of their original counterparts.

"I was brought up with Abba.

"Our aim is to re-create the true Abba sound."

Tickets for The Venue are £12 from 0114 283 8692.
