MRS SA Hamilton's letter (April 7) brought back many fond memories. I was born in number 10 Mitchell Street on March 18, 1922. My maiden name was Joan Hibbard and I also went to St George's School.
I tried to marry at the Albion pub owned by the Sanderson's family, but they didn't cater for weddings at that time.
My parents Nellie and Walter Hibbard worked together at Gettricks' tripe factory.
I remember as a young girl listening from my
bed to the people below, queuing for tripe and tallow.
Times were hard, but friends certainly weren't few! We had to make our own entertainment in those days. Sing songs around the piano accompanied by drums followed by a jubilant conga around the streets.
The 'Bug Hut' (Weston cinema) was an occasional treat!
My late husband, Frank Priest made front page news back in May, 1939 when he came second in the Star Walk, Sheffield's most popular Whit sporting event: 6,000 people crowded the streets to watch.
I have many fond memories of those 'good old days'. People were very friendly and it was like being part of one big happy family.
