JAMES Wignall is writing a book on the surname Yoxall and would like to contact any people in the Barnsley area who may be able to provide information, and particularly photos, of their Yoxall ancestors.
He says: "The Barnsley area is still one of the largest Yoxall communities of this unique surname in the UK. It is believed that all Yoxalls in the area stem from just one couple, James Balmer Yoxall born around 1861 and Sarah GREEN born around 1867.
James belongs to what is known as the 'Moses' line, as the earliest ancestor to date is a Moses Yoxall, born 1751. The Moses line is currently the largest and most researched line in the world.
"James and Sarah had eight children, seven of them boys. Most married and settled in the area, their families also marrying and settling in the area. Because many families had boys, the surname has remained strong, whereas other parts of the country, it has become almost extinct."
