New research looking into the amount of money spent on holidays in the UK has revealed that residents of Yorkshire and Humberside spend the least amount of money on their summer holiday in Britain.

Those from the North East and Wales spent the most on their holidays, whilst the West Midlands and Northern Ireland completed the top 3 lowest spenders.

Researchers at leading money-saving website www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk polled a total of 2,542 people aged 18 and over from around the UK for the purpose of the study. Participants were a balanced range of ages and from an equal spread of regions, in order to ensure unbiased results. All participants had been on a summer holiday in the past year.

Participants were initially asked to disclose how much they spent per person on their last summer holiday. Researchers compiled the average amount of money spent per person on a summer holiday by each region, with results broken down as follows:

* North East - £1150 (per person)

* Wales- £1035

* South East- £910

* North West - £860

* London - £840

* East of England- £770

* South West - £640

* East Midlands - £575

* Scotland - £550

* Northern Ireland - £430

* West Midlands - £405

* Yorkshire & Humberside - £310

Participants were then asked to disclose their current wage to researchers, who compiled this information to reveal the average percentage of annual income that each region spent on their holiday. The results revealed that residents of the North East spent 7% of their annual income on their holiday, whilst residents of London only spent 2.6% of their wage on their summer holiday.

George Charles, spokesperson for VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, said: “Many would assume that high fliers of London would spend more money on their holidays, as they earn more money. However, our research has shown that the lower earners of the North East spend the most on their holidays, showing that perhaps they like to spend their hard earned money on more expensive, luxury holidays.”

He continued: “I have to say, however, that I am a little surprised that the North East spends the most on their holidays, considering it is a higher percentage of their annual wage than other areas of the country. Getting the most out of your money is important in life and that includes with holidays. There are fantastic deals around so that you can get the luxury holiday you desire for less.”
