WORLD champion boxer Jawaid Khaliq has opened a new community gym where children will take part in boxing-based fitness sessions run by the police.
The former welterweight champion was invited to the launch of the gym in Creswell to promote the Ozbox project.
Launched nine years ago by Chesterfield police sergeant Steve Osbaldeston, Ozbox is a boxing-based programme aimed at keeping young people out of trouble.
Derbyshire County Council has donated £462,000 towards the project over the next three years, to target youngsters at risk of spiralling towards crime.
In Creswell a boxing ring, punch bags and fitness equipment have been bought so volunteers can offer sessions at Creswell Youth Centre.
