Supercars, flame throwers and three ageing men - it was Top Gear in all but name as Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May took to Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena.

The ever-popular trio spent two hours entertaining a packed audience with their usual mix of silly humour and sillier stunts.

Early on, Richard Hammond raced an ironing board against James May in a washing machine, before the three strapped themselves into three-wheeled Reliant Robin cars and spent much of their time flipping over.

Jeremy then dropped hints about the threesome’s return to television after Hammond began talking about muscle cars, telling the arena: “You’re not in America Richard... not yet.

“I know there’s someone in here from the Sheffield Star tonight. You didn’t hear that.”

Later, he added: “We have had a lot of interest and the three of us may be on a television or an internet near you very soon.”

A standout stunt involved Hammond standing inside a giant ‘salad spinner’ sphere while several motorbikes whizzed around him, narrowly missing his head.

A pair of spectacular burning Porsches were then followed by an array of supercars including a McLaren, an Aston Martin and a Lamborghini - as well as the Ferrari James May has just treated himself to.

“You’re going to need a job soon,” Clarkson teased, after May revealed he had spent £6,000 on the car’s painted stripe.

In true Top Gear style (‘but we’re not allowed to say the TG words’, quipped May), the show was rounded off with a chaotic game of car football contested by England and Argentina.

Neil Oldham, High Green, Sheffield, said: “I thought it was brilliant, I thought the stunts were great, and the banter was pretty good. The stunt with the bikers was fantastic.”

Clarkson, Hammond and May Live is at Sheffield Motorpoint Arena today (Saturday) and for two more shows on Sunday (June 7).
