A garden centre may not be the most obvious choice to entertain the children during the summer holidays...

But Sunnybank Gardens in Hatfield Woodhouse looks set to be one of the most in- demand attractions during the six-week break thanks to the addition of a homemade ice cream parlour.

The garden centre and tea room is now home to the Yorkshire Ice Cream Farm – the only homemade ice cream parlour in Doncaster.

Since taking over the reins last summer, the Storey family - Rebecca, husband Edward and their two children Edward, 12, and Davis, 10, have certainly made their mark on the venue.

Boasting 40 different flavours, the ice cream parlour is a Willy Wonka-style emporium with all manner of weird and wonderful creations. From bubble gum and custard cream to sophisticated sweet treats for adults including gin and tonic and prosecco sorbet – and even Irn-Bru flavour.

With locally-sourced ingredients the unique flavours have been created by owner Rebecca Storey who has 30 years experience in the artisan food industry both in the UK and abroad.

Rebecca said: “The feedback has been amazing. This was something we really wanted to do as there’s nothing really like this in the area.

“We recently had a Facebook vote asking customers to pick a new flavour and custard cream won.

“We’re always open to new suggestions and regularly add different flavours.

“We’ve found it to be really popular with children and adults.”

The family also offer a vintage ice cream tricycle, affectionately known as Betty, available for weddings and special occasions.

Planning permission is also being sought for a crazy golf course on site and a new larger tea room and deli as well as a traditional hay bale style play area.

Rebecca said: “We want to turn Sunnybank into a real family destination.

“We’ve got a lot of ideas and plans in place so it’s an exciting time. It’s hard work but so worth it.

“The plan is to make the garden centre more family friendly so things like the hay bale play barn are all about creating something that will be good old-fashioned fun.”
