Showroom bucking the trend

IT may be doom and gloom on the Stock Exchange and the bin lorry may be struggling to get up your street but Sheffield's Showroom Cinema is reporting a record-breaking box office.

The county's art-house film haven has been bucking the recession by recording its best ever monthly business since it opened in 1995.

In January 2009 figures were up by 26% compared to its previous best-selling month.

The success is believed to be down to a combination of several high profile film releases and a growing enthusiasm in Sheffield for the Showroom programme of independent and world cinema film releases

Since the New Year a number of film releases have literally had audiences queuing around the block, including Oscar hopefuls The Reader starring Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes, Mickey Rourke's The Wrestler and the unprecedented blockbuster Slumdog Millionaire.

The Showroom Cinema has also received outstanding response to its seasonal programme of international films including a focus on Cuba in tandem with the release of Che Part One and Two, a series of films to mark Holocaust Memorial Day and a celebration of the Chinese New Year.

"We are delighted to have such a positive start to the New Year in the teeth of the recession," says chief executive Ian Wild.

"It is clear that people still want to get out and the Showroom Cinema offers an affordable and attractive entertainment. As an independent cinema we show a potent mix of the best releases from around the world alongside classic cinema."

And the good news could continue this month as the Showroom programme includes Cannes Palme D'Or winner The Class and the awe-inspiring Sheffield Action Adventure Film Festival.
