GIFT OF LIFE CAMPAIGN: Sign up to be an organ donor
THE Star is calling on readers to give hundreds of sick adults and children in desperate need of an organ transplant the gift of life.
In South Yorkshire and north Derbyshire a staggering 249 people are waiting for new hearts, livers, lungs, kidneys and pancreas to give them a second chance at life.
Today in UK three people will die because of a lack of organ donors - and since April as many as nine people in this region alone have lost their lives before getting the chance of a transplant.
To help tackle this appalling situation, The Star has launched our Gift of Life campaign urging readers to add their names to the NHS Organ Donor Register and potentially help others to live on after their own deaths.
We want as many as 25,000 readers to take the vital step on to the register.
Our campaign has the backing of medical experts including consultant Andrew Raftery, who carries out kidney transplants at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital, and patients.
"The facts are that people are dying for a shortage of organs," said Mr Raftery, who is urging people to take action and sign up to the register.
