Karate enthusiasts enjoyed the opportunity to learn from the best as Hollywood star and seven times world champion Mike Chat crossed ‘The Pond’ to teach them a thing or two here in South Yorkshire.

The original blue Power Ranger kicked off a special seminar for students at Excel Martial Arts.

Karate mum Lara Beardshaw, aged 41, of Chesterfield, and both her sons, Rees, 11, and Devan, nine, attended the seminar.

She said: “The boys thoroughly enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime experience and everyone left the class blown away by the talent on show.”

Three sessions ran throughout the day, for tots, juniors and adults.

Mike Chat was not the only star there, as the club has its own celebrity teacher.

Liam Richards, aged 23, from Rotherham, is a two times world champion and also holds more than 10 British titles in martial arts.

He starred on hit ITV show Britain’s Got Talent as one half of martial arts duo Strike, who made it through to the final.

Liam now runs Excel from the Holbrook industrial estate in Mosborough, Sheffield, catering for youngsters through to adults.

Excel has more than 400 students and is expanding into new premises to accommodate even more.
