Peak District bikers ban

QUAD bikes, trail bikes and 4x4s have been banned from a country track running from Edale to Chapel-en-le-Frith.

The Peak District National Park Authority has introduced the 18-month ban as a last resort to halt severe environmental damage to the 3km route near Rushup Edge.

The route crosses a Special Area of Conservation, a Special Protection Area and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Deep ruts, mud, water and exposed rocks caused by the bikers were deterring walkers, cyclists and horse-riders away from the path onto surrounding land, said to house fragile wildlife habitats, which was getting eroded.

Access and rights of way manager, Mike Rhodes, said: “We are working hard to maintain a positive relationship with responsible recreational motor-users.”
