Witchy women to cast a fresh spell

patsy Matheson and Becky Mills are half of the all-conquering, all-female acoustic outfit Waking the Witch.
But they are about to show they deliver no short measures when they appear as a duo at Sheffield’s Greystones venue this weekend.
Since the well-publicised break-up of Waking the Witch, the pair have continued to delight audiences throughout the UK – Patsy as half of a duo with Clive Gregson and Becky singing alongside Ken Nicol of Steeleye Span and Ashley Hutchings.
After they both released the ladies decided it was time for a reunion of sorts so are on the road with their unique and personal sound, drawing on roots in traditional and contemporary folk, acoustic blues, RnB, jazz and rock.
Patsy released first solo album, With My Boots On, back in 1996 and it quickly earned her fans and admirers, not least people such as Glenn Tilbrook, Christy Moore and the late John Martyn, all of whom featured her as support act.
In 2003, she took on the challenge of putting together the all-female vocal harmony group, Waking the Witch who rapidly went from strength to strength, releasing three groundbreaking albums.
Since the farewell tour, Patsy has been busy with solo work, not least in the studio. Latest release is Stories of Angels and Guitars which has been earning rave reviews.
Becky’s album, Dandelion will be available at live dates and released officially later in the year.
Their shows will feature some Waking the Witch songs, as well as songs from both new albums, delivered with intricate harmonies.

Mick Ryan and Paul Downes are at the Chester field Folk Club on Friday.
Mick is a fine singer of traditional and original songs, who wrote both comic and serious material for the Crows in the 1980s. Paul is among the most respected artists on the British acoustic music scene. He is a supeerb acoustic guitarist who is master of a wide range of styles. He has worked with Phil Beer, The Arizona Smoke Revue, Pete Seeger and, The Joyce Gang.
THE Dizzy Club bring their versions of Latin, swing, soul and Sinatra to Letwell Village Hall on Saturday. The band features John Naylor on vocals and guitar, Mike Fleming (double bass), Patrick Walker (violin and lead guitar) and Caroline (drums). Tickets: 01909 731626.
TIM Edey, who is one of the finest multi-instrumental players of his generation, joins forces with harmonica virtuoso Brendan Power to visit the Rock@Maltby next Friday. Tim is a great guitar and button accordion play who has toured and recorded with Sharron Shannon, Michael McGoldrick, Mary Black and Altan. Brendan has worked with the likes of Kate Bush, Sting, Van Morrison and Paul Brady. This Friday’s guests at the club are Maire Ni Chathasaigh and Chris Newman,
Singer, songwriter and guitarist Nat Johnson and her folk pop five piece, The Figureheads, launch their new album I’m Across I’m Ashore on Wednesday at the Memorial Hall.
