When the Gong gets tough, worry
THINK of the maddest gig you have been to and double it. Or imagine if Monty Python did rock music, but without the deliberate laughs.
Got it? Then you're on the way to comprehending what Gong - the UK's leading psychedelic rock band - are about when they get on stage.
They have reunited founder Daevid Allen with Steve Hillage - a previous visitor to Sheffield with his alt dance outfit System 7 - for the first time since 1974's You album and they play The Leadmill on Monday in support of new studio album 2032.
"2032 is an extension of our mythology – the seventh instalment," says Hillage. "People ask if we're some kind of religious cult and we're definitely not. We just open ourselves to what we consider to be interesting ideas. We've got a Gong universe and all these things fit together in a strange kind of jigsaw puzzle."
