We’re Wanted men at arena
The Wanted performing at Sheffield Arena
CALL it a premonition or simply good marketing but there’s good reason this band were named The Wanted.
As many as 12,000 mainly female fans confirmed that again on Saturday when the boy band made their Sheffield Arena debut.
Even they appeared overwhelmed by the extent of the welcome in Sheffield - and they were swiftly forgiven when one of the lads slipped up by urging fans: “Manchester, sing along.”
Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Nathan Sykes and Tom Parker have come a mighty long way in two years, something confirmed by pint-sized singer Nathan, sporting the strongest vocal of the night.
“Two years ago we were doing school tours,” he said, surveying a few of the more inappropriate banners in a sea of young waving arms.
Then The Wanted tick all the right hot pop property boxes; they have the looks, the moves and now hits built to turn arenas like this into giant aerobics studios for a night.
A perhaps unlikely Coldplay medley allowed them to prove they can play instruments as well as sing, swagger and smile.
“We can’t believe we’re even here,” said Tom, in between three costume changes and gauging the bounce factor of tunes like Lightning and All Time Low, the hit that lit the fame touchpaper.
Sloppy moment Heart Vacancy allowed for a breather but by the time Max introduced the finale - asking ‘Glad You Came?’ - countless calories had already been burned.
