Volcanic eruption of wall art

PEOPLE have long been drawn to arty Sheffield band Volcanoes – now the colourful chaps are set to leave their mark on various venues in more than one way.

Tomorrow sees these bright sparks pursue a new mission by putting murals on three city music spots "to give a little back" to the venues that have supported them over the years.

Say their people: "Rather than waste more money on fliers they opted for something that wasn't going to end up in the bin.

"Sam (singer/rhythm guitarist) couldn't recall if it was a dream or he was once told The Beatles painted the toilets of their local pub with their own murals. After discussion with the rest of the band, it was decided leaving a permanent mark would be a great thank-you to followers and venues."

So tomorrow they will play 15-minute acoustic sets between 7pm and 8pm at West Street Live and The Grapes before a full live set at 9pm at The Harley.

And they've roped in three artists to supply the images. Gemma Hobson has been designing for Volcanoes since the acoustic days of Shirles And Beds, Paul Bedford trained in fashion and has designed costumes for the band's photo shoots and Jim Connolly is a local illustrator whose work has featured in everything from comic books to the National Maritime Museum. He's also designing the cover for the latest Volcanoes EP Sugar And Snarls, which is out on April 26.

"At first they were unsure if any of the venues would be up for it, but the first venue they approached were enthusiastic," says the band's spokesman. "In fact they were so positive that they decided to do three murals, spread over three venues."

Formed in 2005 and now based in Sheffield and Leeds, Volcanoes have been spreading their musical ash beyond home post codes of late courtesy of EPs such as Shaking That Brass and Red Door, some choice support slots and being featured as one of Radio One's Edith Bowman's Bedroom Bands.

SHEFFIELD mavericks 65daysofstatic have been forced to scrap shows in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Taiwan in the coming weeks "due to a serious family emergency".

The band have also pulled their appearances at the imminent SXSW festival in Texas where they were to feature with a strong city contingent, including In The Nursery and Standard Fair.

"This is for an unrelated reason, mainly due tofinancial costs," they say. "We would like to thank the PRS Foundation for their support in trying to make this work for us, and would like to apologise to anybody who had made plans to come and see any of our SXSW shows."

Still heading to Austin are Alvarez Kings who play their showcase on March 20 ahead of debut single The Sequel emerging on Of National Importance Records nine days later. On March 13 the Kings play a 'send off' show in the St Patrick's Day big white tent, this year outside the City Hall because the big wheel has nicked the usual spot.
