MUSICal youngsters are calling for Sheffield folk to dig out their dusty instruments and donate them to a good cause.

Children using Star Studios, Carver Street, Sheffield city centre, which offers music workshops for young people and adults with learning difficulties, desperately need new portable equipment, but there is only limited funding to provide them.

Now leaders hope people will hear their call to hand over forgotten flutes, unused keyboards or passed-over guitars.

Julia McNally, development manager at studio operator The Musical Works, said: “Funding is getting ever tighter and the numbers of people we work with ever greater.

“Our children and adults are so enthusiastic about learning to play instruments, jamming together and songwriting, but, with our limited equipment and funding, we often find they are waiting for instruments to become available.

“It is a great idea to put out a call to the people of Sheffield who may be harbouring a once-loved musical instrument that has gone dusty with under-use and ask them to donate it.”

The Musical Works, a not-for-profit organisation, offers tuition or mentoring for all kinds of musicians, from bands to DJs.

A home lending service for students to practice at home, as many do not have an instrument of their own, could be set up if enough instruments are donated.

The service is searching for portable instruments including guitars, keyboards, microphones, portable amplifiers and music technology equipment.

Julia said: “There is strong evidence to support the fact that making music has the power to positively change people’s lives. We have seen this time and time again.

“To my knowledge this instrument amnesty has not been done in Sheffield before and, as we are a city of music lovers, I hope residents will support our cause.”
