Sax in the street Spinal solution
SOME 25 years after they helped inspire the world's greatest rock spoof movie, the Saxon story continues to be a bit Spinal Tap.
The day after the Tap play Wembley Arena, one of the two Saxons now touring, namely Oliver/Dawson Saxon, play a free open air gig in Sheaf Square outside Sheffield's main railiway station for the Wednesday Night Live project.
Next week's show will celebrate the 30th anniver-sary of Saxon's first album and the 25th anniversary of This Is Spinal Tap. "We played our first ever gig in Sheffield," says bassist Steve Dawson, "so we are delighted to be back where it all began for us.
"We're also flattered by all the attention we still get because of Spinal Tap – the cast are still great friends of ours after all these years."
Harry Shearer, who played Tap bassist Derek Smalls, accompanied Saxon on their 1981 tour and directly based his character on Dawson.
