REVIEW: Lloyd Cole, Memorial Hall, Sheffield

BACK in his 80s heyday Lloyd Cole and his band the Commotions were fairly regular visitors to Sheffield City Hall, picking up a loyal following along the way.

Tonight, in a rare solo appearance, he's round the other side of the building in the cosier Memorial Hall on the first date of a tour built around a private gig at a wedding.

He arrives on stage as if he's just got off the plane from his now home in Massachusetts - flustered, sweaty and forgetting song lyrics to several songs in the first of two sets.

Lloyd always was a nervy performer even with a band around him, and here he's full of apologies for a notable attack of stage rustiness.

After a half hour break, and perhaps a couple of stiff drinks, the second half is virtually flawless with some extra songs thrown in, LLoyd says, to make up for the first set mayhem.

And after an hour and three quarters of songs from throughout his career, most people have heard their favourites - from shoulda-been hits like Don't Look Back, top album tracks like Pay For It and Rattlesnakes, to his best known work like Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken, Cut Me Down and Perfect Skin.

Good show in the end - but Lloyd still needs to lighten up a bit...
