REVIEW: Kasabian, Sheffield 02 Academy

MOMENTS before showtime and the only noise to be heard in the O2 Academy was the undulating menace of reverberating electro pulses.

As it proved, little else was required to stoke an already eager crowd.

With an imperious hauteur after conquering Glastonbury, a heroes welcome greeted the band as they casually marched on stage, picked up their instruments and launched into Underdog. Shoot The Runner sustained the ballsy opening with focus centred on frontman Tom Meighan due to his rousing, summoning gestures. Not that the masses needed much persuasion; from the chundering basslines of Empire and its almost regal chorus to the uplifting manifesto for a broken generation that is Where Did All The Love Go?

With initial exertion spent, the tempo slowed from the elevating to the brooding for the acoustic Thick As Thieves as Meighan's rich vocals lifted the track to higher plains. The break was needed by all and owing to an intro reminiscent of The Doors, Fire built until the beckoning chorus enveloped those in wait. For those who sought more, the Leicester men's aggro anthem Club Foot obliged.

Like Underdog, the dirty looped riff of Vlad The Impaler signalled the encore before the band emphatically performed the track with all its rigorous intent intact.

Intriguingly, a cover of rave anthem You Got The Love loosely introduced set closer L.S.F. which granted Meighan his final indulgence as the crowd insisted on relaying the chorus back. As Meighan himself would put it, empire.

Tickets for Kasabian's Sheffield Arena return on November 23 go on sale this Friday via 01142565656.
