REVIEW: Kaiser Chiefs, O2 Academy

Everyday I Love You Less and Less roared Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson as the Leeds rockers launched into 90-minute set at Sheffield’s O2 Academy.

And from that moment, the 2,000-strong sell-out crowd were putty in his hands as he urged them to jump, wave, clap and sing through an impressive setlist.

With no album to promote on these shores, the Kaisers treated their adoring fans to a greatest hits-style set, including Everything Is Average Nowadays, Modern Way, number-one smash Ruby and the anthemic I Predict a Riot. Even new songs such as On The Run were well received by the large crowd.

Wilson’s voice was not at its usual best, 13 gigs into a 20-date UK tour, not that it seemed to bother him or his fans as he gave a performance full of fun and energy.

The mop-topped lead singer was his typical whirling-dervish self, swinging the mic stand above his head, climbing the huge speakers either side of the stage and culminating in singing penultimate song Take My Temperature sat astride the first-floor railings, high above the packed dance floor below.

An encore of Love’s Not A Competition (But I’m Winning) and Oh My God sealed a triumphant night for the Kaisers and sent the sweaty crowd home happy.
