PREVIEW - Alyn Cosker Trio, Sheffield Jazz, Friday
OFTEN hailed as one of the best of a new generation of jazz drummers, this Scottish-born musician deals in genre-spanning music with a focus on dynamic and exciting improvisations.
Having earned his stripes on the Scottish jazz, folk, R&B and rock scene, Alyn's credits since have included playing with UK luminaries suchas Tommy Smith, Courtney Pine, Bheki Mseleku, Jim Mullen, Wolfstone, Jason Rebello and Brian Kellock, as well as international stars Lee Konitz, Bruce Barth, Joe Locke,Gary Burton and Geoffrey Keezer.He's also currently the drummerwith the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and can be heardon dozens of recordings.
The rest of his trio comprises guitaristDavid Dunsmuir, whose playing style draws influence from thegreat Alan Holdsworth, and Michael Janisch on electric/ acousticbass.
But the icing on the gig cake at Ecclesall Road's Millennium Hall tomorrow is award-winning New York saxophonist Seamus Blake, heralded as being one of the most imaginativeplayers of his generation.
England-born and Canada-raised, he is a mainstayin the Mingus Band but has also performed with Dave Douglas, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, John Schofield, Brad Meldhau, Wayne Krantz and Jack Dejohnette, as well as releasing severalaward-winning albums under his own name.
