Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll Essential Collection, Ian Dury (DMG TV, Demon Digital)

WITH the much-plugged biopic taking us on a trip down Dury Lane from today, here are the musical reasons to be cheerful about a guy who lived a short but colourful - and productive - life. With 2010 being the 10th anniversary of the chief Blockhead's death this is a timely reminder of his best known and biggest recordings. As inimitable as he was innovative, Dury's gruff Cockney tonsils accompanied often cheeky missives that have inspired the likes of Damon Albarn to Robbie Williams.

This 20 song stash features What A Waste, the funky Reasons To Be Cheerful (Part 3), I Want To Be Straight and the off piste dancefloor classic Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick, tracks as much about their master's quirky personality as the abilities of his very capable - and still touring - band. It is hard to believe some of these tunes are 30 years old. Somehow, thankfully, they have endured, so if you've never heard 1988's New Boots And Panties, now is the time to go check it out.

Up In The Air, Music From The Motion Picture (Rhino)

STICKING with the big screen, although a very different flick all together... by all accounts George Clooney's latest benefits from rather than relies on the very credible batch of tunes chosen to accompany it. Juno director Jason Reitman is behind the song selection as well as the camera - not surprisingly having won a Grammy for the Juno soundtrack. His tale about a business traveller doesn't call upon obvious players, however, mixing the late Elliott Smith with CSNY, Dan Auerbach and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, here with Woody Guthrie's American classic This Land Is Your Land.

Reitman says the music is like a character in the film. "I start thinking about the music very early on; while I'm writing the script, I'm putting together a matching iTunes library. The result is a collection of songs that speaks to the nature of travel and warmth of human connection." It includes two previously unreleased tracks, Help Yourself by Chicago-based Sad Brad Smith and Up In The Air by Kevin Renick. Not all soundtracks are aural fluff, you know.
