CORONATION Street star Katherine Kelly is the toast of South Yorkshire after winning the National Television Award for Best Serial Drama Performance, writes Graham Walker.

Sheffield’s own Eliot Kennedy was also celebrating after Best Talent Show went to the X Factor - which he joined this year as Talent Development Director

His best friend and X Factor judge Gary Barlow got a special Landmark Award.

Barnsley girl Katherine, or Kate to her friends, won the public vote in recognition of her role as Becky McDonald, a part she played for six years before her character left the street in a blaze of glory on Monday for a new life in Barbados.

Kate also began her own new start this week with a stage role in She Stoops to Conquer at the National Theatre in London.

Her theatre role meant she was unable to receive her award, which was collected at the O2 Arena in London by Corrie colleagues Ryan Thomas (Jason Grimshaw) and Paula Lane (Kylie Platt).

Paula, who plays Becky’s sister in the soap, read out a few words from her friend.

She said: “Hurray. What a wonderful week it’s been for both Becky and me. Becky gets Barbados and I get a NTA. Woohoo!

“I’m so sorry I can’t be at the O2 this evening to thank the Great British public for this award. I wish I could give everyone who voted for me a power hug, Becky style.

“I especially want to thank the Corrie viewers, not just for tonight but for the unwavering support for Becky for the past five years.

“Thank you for loving her as much as I have. I will never forget it. Thank you to everyone I worked with at ITV, for a gift of a part. I couldn’t have done it without you and I miss you all dearly. Be sure to have a cider for me tonight and I will see you all soon.”

She was up against Eastenders star Jessie Wallace, Alison King from Coronation Street, Emmerdale’s Danny Miller.

Grammy Award winner Eliot, said of the X Factor win: “ That’s great news. Everyone involved deserves it. It is a gruelling schedule and very little time off. Congrats to all involved.”

Great actress Certainly deserved the Award She will be missed as the Street seems to be a mixture of nonsense such as Norris, Roys Mother and the coming boy friend, The Police woman. None of them carry any conviction
