City spawned music of a generation
AMONG the most anticipated releases of Doc/Fest has been from Sheffield-based film-maker Eve Wood with her new film The Beat Is The Law Part One.
It premiered last night but is screened by Showroom from Monday until Thursday next week.
The sequel to city music documentary Made In Sheffield follows Jarvis Cocker, Richard Hawley, Moloko's Mark Brydon, Warp's Rob Gordon and other Sheffield natives on a northern musical adventure through Thatcher's politically charged 1980s. It uses original interviews, archive imagery and a representative soundtrack to document the social and musical defiance of Sheffield and its people.
Eve says: "BITL is like the second darker part to MIS but, despite the darker tone, it is a positive film. Although the city is on its uppers, the artists make the best of a bad situation, determined to stay in Sheffield, and end up creating some of the most influential music of a generation."
There will be a special panel discussion after Thursday's screening chaired by music journalist John Robb with former Pulp guitarist Russell Senior, Jake Harries of Chakk and Eve Wood, plus live music.
The Beat Is The Law will be available on DVD from December 3 from the official website.
