Ace goes solo

WHILE his former colleagues continue to apply far too much black and white foundation to their millionaire chops, former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley is plying his solo trade at Sheffield's Corporation on Thursday – one of just two UK dates.

Ace, pictured, is best known as the original lead guitarist of Kiss, joining in 1973.

Ace penned Cold Gin and Strange Ways but left in 1982 amid creative differences, forming Frehley's Comet in the mid '80s.

He toured as Bad Boys Of Kiss with former Kisser Peter Criss before re-joining his old bandmates in 1996 for the Kiss MTV Unplugged album and a worldwide reunion tour.

He quit again after a 'farewell tour' but Kiss carried on and headline Download this summer.

Frehley went solo again, made sporadic appearances with other bands, moved to Florida and finally embraced sobriety.

In 2005 he played a drug dealer in the film Remedy.

CLOCKS frontman Tom Hewitt has vivid memories of a previous time he headed north.

"Sheffield was the location for the great Clocks vs The Departure five-a-side football match in November," says the singer / keyboard player, whose band is back on Tuesday with Scouting For Girls. "I still bear a scar on my elbow from a glorious save during my spell in goal."

Best mates from Surrey, their music is a sublime cross between The Beatles and Oasis, fusing '60s Brit-pop with the spikey lyrics and edge of a '90s indie band.

"Our music is summery and happy melodically, but with dark lyrics - so it's bittersweet."

Clocks release official first single Old Valve Radio the day before they play the Octagon.
