A room with a four-star view of exciting London

WE ALMOST didn't leave the room. With views like the ones offered at the Royal Lancaster Hotel – looking out over London's sprawling Hyde Park – it would have been easy to sit and sip a glass of wine whilst gazing out through the huge windows, watching the park and the city below us as the evening slipped by.

On the 18th and top floor of this four-star luxury hotel, slap bang next to the capital's largest Royal park, you really are spoilt by a brilliant mix of land and cityscape.

From one end of the suite you could spot the Royal Albert Hall, surrounded by the greenery of the park, contrasted with the bustling picture from another window which offered amazing views out east to the City of London.

And so it was with some difficulty that we pulled ourselves away from the executive suite, complete with sofa, flat screen TV and spacious bathroom with power shower and robes, where we truly got into the mood for our night out.

But making the break couldn't have been easier – situated as we were right next to Lancaster Gate tube station and within walking distance of Notting Hill.

To satisfy a curiosity brought about by the hit film we headed first on foot to the affluent district.

After a few drinks and a meal, it was back underground, heading for Brick Lane and Shoreditch to take in some of the trendier bars – which of course came with a price tag but were well worth it for a weekend splurge.

With its central location – five minutes' walk from Marble Arch and Oxford Street – getting home was also easy, although the traffic at 2am wasn't something we'd bargained for! Agree on your taxi fare in advance to ensure you don't get stung.

Next morning the treats continued as we enjoyed breakfast in the hotel's a la carte dining room. It was more like dinner out at a posh restaurant as we selected starters and main courses. To begin I went for the grilled fruit skewer – barbecued sticky strawberry, mango and pineapple served with a tangy raspberry coulis, while my partner had a berry fruit salad which was also fresh and delicious. Then I opted for the English breakfast while he chose the eggs Benedict with smoked salmon. Both were delicious.

The Royal Lancaster certainly has all the comforts to meet its philosophy of being "your home away from home" – but with those views, that breakfast and the city of London on your doorstep, it's unlike anywhere I've lived.
