Texas Chicken opens fire on Colonel Sanders
THE first big threat to the finger lickin' dominance of Kentucky Fried Chicken in Britain begins this Saturday, rather improbably, on Ship Hill, Rotherham.
It will be the only the third opened by American-based Texas Chicken, a company based in San Antonio, Texas, which has 1,600 outlets around the world but is only now coming to Britain.
By the end of the year it will have 50, many of them like Tahir Khan's shop on Ship Hill, previously trading as a Dixie Fried Chicken franchise.
Texas, known in its homeland as Church's Chicken, is taking on Colonel Sanders's KFC, which has over 700 British outlets.
The first openings are in predominantly areas with a large Asian population, as they sell only halal meat.
"At the moment there is not really a strong alrenative to KFC," says a spokeswoman.
As well as chicken, Texas also sells dishes like mashed potato and gravy, stuffed jalapeno peppers and apple pie.
The company was founded in 1952 and now operates in 18 countries.
Rushour duo concentrate on restaurant venture
PANSY and Jeremy Plester closed their Rushour cafe at Hartshead in Sheffield city centre on Friday after five years.
The lease had come to an end and they have decided to concentrate on their Rushour restaurant on London Road, Heeley.
"We've had to split ourselves in two and the restaurant is getting very busy," says Jeremy.
Pansy says the area around the cafe has not quite developed as fast and as well as they would have liked.
ONE person in 100 suffers from Coeliac disease – an intolerance to gluten, a protein found in bread, pasta, fish fingers, cakes, biscuits and beer.
If something containing gluten is accidentally eaten it can cause bloating, abdominal pains, diarrhoea, skin problems and other symptoms.
Now Coeliac UK, the national charity, is asking chefs at all levels to design a dish, or even a three-course meal, which could be happily eaten by Coeliac sufferers.
The competition will be judged by leading chef Giorgio Locatelli who will be looking for innovation.
Send your entries by e-mail to competition@coeliac.org.uk or by post to Recipe Competition, Coeliac UK, Suites A-D, Octagon Court, High Wycombe, Bucks HP11 2HS.
The prize is to be named gluten-free chef of the year.
YOU have to be old to appreciate the humble sprout, a survey by supermaket chain Netto reveals.
And we like it even less in Yorkshire compared to the rest of the country.
It comes eighth in the county's popularity poll with only five per cent of people preferring it, compared to eight per cent nationally.
And while one in ten of the 55-plus age group like sprouts that drops to just two per cent of 18-24 year-olds.
No prizes for guessing which veg comes top of the pops: spuds, with 22 per cent of Tykes preferring it to broccoli, the runner-up.
