TAKEAWAY TEST: Bakewell Fish and Chips

HERE'S an idea for a 'staycation' (hate that word) day trip - go to Bakewell for the day, get some fish and chips and eat them sitting by the river, pretending you're at the seaside.

It's going to take a bit of a stretch of the imagination but the lively Peak District town is always pleasant and we head there occasionally on Monday, which is market day, and combine shopping with a walk.

You could stroll by the river or we often head up the Monsal Trail, following the old railway line, which you can get to from behind the old station building at the edge of town.

A good brisk walk builds up an appetite and we decided to call in at Bakewell Fish and Chips on Water Street, one of two chippies in the town centre.

As they are traditional, the most exotic dish you can order is a spicy chicken burger (90p), one of a choice of four including a veggie burger. The rest of the menu is haddock, plaice, cod roe, fish cake, sausages, pies and pasties and accompaniments like peas, beans, gravy curry, bread etc.

You could order a battered Mars Bar for 65p or a pineapple ring at 45p. Rather you than me, though.

We stuck to tradition with one haddock, chips and peas and a haddock and small chips.

There are loads of benches to sit on at the river bank and lots of waterfowl to keep you entertained - and nick any scraps. There will be some as the portions are more than generous.

However, that's the self-appointed job of our dog Damsel, whose supermodel looks (she's a retired racing greyhound) hide the fact that she'll eat anything, given half a chance. She enjoyed herself immensely as the ducks looked on in envy.

The fish and chips were pretty decent, although just a little too greasy for me, but still hit the spot.

The chippie only does soft drinks so if you fancy tea or coffee you could go to the stall near the Co-op.

Next to that, incidentally, is a stall selling fantastic curries, bhajis etc which is highly recommended.
