TAKEAWAY TEST - Andrew's, Chapel Walk

TUCKED away, yet close enough to all Sheffield city centre's shops and attractions to be very convenient...

That's Andrews Caf and Tea Rooms, in Chapel Walk.

The classy little eaterie is best-known as a coffee shop or for light lunches.

But it also does great takeaway food.

I made the discovery when needing a quick bite with relatives before going to the pantomime at the Lyceum.

On a Sunday afternoon, there didn't seem to be much option other than shop-bought sandwiches, as many cafs were closed.

However, I spotted the boards outside Andrews and we decided to check it out.

Although we had come in through the wrong door, using the caf rather than takeaway entrance, and there was a bit of indecision among us when ordering, the staff could not have been more helpful.

There's an extensive range of 14 varieties of sandwiches or filled rolls available. Two of us went for chicken and bacon rolls, while our third order was a grated cheddar cheese roll.

We waited just a few minutes for our orders, all freshly-made, plentifully-filled and delicious.

As we were fairly hungry, there was room for something extra – and we were tempted to indulge by the range of cakes on display.

Generous slices of Victoria sponge, with butter cream and jam, and chocolate fudge cake, plus a muffin lavishly topped with icing and jelly decorations were soon added to the order.

With a drink each it all came to 14 – not bad at all, working out at just over 4 per person.

The cafe and takeaway is open seven days a week. As well as sandwiches, rolls and cakes, it also does bacon butties and toast in the mornings, plus soup.

Since opening last year, it has built up a steady trade from city centre workers and shoppers and is becoming popular at weekends with theatre-goers – with even some of the panto's cast having dropped by.
