Sultan rules on a curry battlefield

Sultans Northfield Road Take away Test.

Sultans Northfield Road Take away Test.

It is pretty much accepted that times are hard at the moment.

So to my mind, anywhere where I can go and get a couple of curries and still come home with change from a tenner is to be embraced.

A special offer at Sultans in Crookes made me pretty happy with my lot when I popped out for a takeaway there for myself and my wife.

Sultans is the latest name over the door at a venue which has had several names in recent years, in an area well served for curry.

There is another outlet directly across the road and others along the street. So it is going to be pretty competitive for curry along Crookes, and anyone opening up there has to get it right.

I was pleased when I arrived to see a 20 per cent discount offer on carry-outs and the interior is a very comfortable place to wait for your food, with two comfortable sofas.

The menu took in the full range of curry staples, as well as English options like chicken and chips.

Having ordered, I was told it would be around 25 minutes for the food to be ready, and they were spot on.

Our household is one for a good old chicken tikka biryani, and that was the order for both myself and my wife.

With the offer, that cost us £9.50 in total for the two meals.

Getting it back home, the order came including a bag containing sliced tomato, cucumber, and cabbage. My wife did not want any of that so I troughed most of it as I was putting the main meal on the plates.

As far as the curry was concerned, it was really tasty, and not too hot in terms of the spices.

If I was one of the judges on Masterchef I may have claimed the chicken was a bit overcooked, but I’m not and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It is something of a rarity for me to get a curry, but my experience of Sultans would certainly encourage me to go back.
