Another success in foie gras campaign

ANIMAL Rights activists have scored another success in their campaign against foie gras being sold in Sheffield.

Sheffield Animal Friends have persuaded the Showroom restaurant on Paternoster Row to take it off the menu.

They spotted it on a sample menu on the Showroom's website.

Head chef Paul Murton, above, says it was put together for a wedding and used as a sample menu.

"We figured since the foie gras issue is now such a massive topic of debate we would rather be a more ethical company and avoid any further conflict or receive any of the threats we had been warned about."

The protesters, who have already claimed victories at two local restaurants and got it banned from stalls of the continental market, also picketed Moran's on Abbeydale Road South.

They had seen the duck's liver on a website but chef-patron Bryan Moran pointed out it was an old menu from last year. He's not selling foie gras now but refused to sign an undertaking not to use it again.

Tasty prize at book-signing

WINE merchant Andrew Coghlan is laying on a spread when he stages a booksigning session at Waterstone's, Orchard Square, on Tuesday, April 15. There will be free food and wine and a chance to help him and wife Janet sink a rare claret worth over 200 a bottle, a 1959 Chateau Talbot.

Bosses of wine merchants Barrels & Bottles and a Chesterfield-based cookery school, they've written the book to show how to match wine with food.

Andrew says: "This particular vintage would sell for nearly 2,500 a case. We'll ask everyone who buys the book to put their names in a hat and invite the winner to help us drink it."

The book costs 14.95. Tickets for the evening, which starts at 7pm, are available from Waterstone's or Barrels and Bottles on 01246 453 399.
