Youngsters say thanks to Charles, 84, for giving up his time

SCAWTHORPE Castle Hills Primary School honoured a volunteer who has been giving up his free time to help pupils for over a decade.

Charles Bradley, aged 84, comes into school four days each week to listen to children reading aloud. In recognition of his work, he was recently presented with a portrait, drawn by one of the children, and gifts from members of staff.

Charles used to be a fire officer at Bentley Colliery before he retired in 1980. He began helping out in the 1990s when his own grandchildren were at the school.

Charles initially came to listen to them read. When they left the school, he just carried on.

Charles said: "I've always enjoyed a good book and I like coming here because it gets me out of the house."

Headteacher Alan Smith said: "All of the children at Castle Hills know Mr Bradley and have benefited from his help. We are incredibly grateful to him for giving up so much of his time over all these years."

Coun Andrea Milner, Doncaster Council cabinet member for children's services, said: "I am touched by Mr Bradley's generosity in giving up so much of his free time to help the school."
