PARISHIONERS will be glad to return to the catholic Cathedral Church Of St Marie this weekend - after spending the last 14 months worshipping in a former hairdressers.
Weekend services have been held at St Matthew’s Anglican Church in Carver Street while the renovations have been taking place.
But daily prayer, weekday mass and confessions have all been taking place in what was previously Saks hair salon in Norfolk Row.
Perming stalls, mirrors and sinks had to be ripped out and replaced with pews, a pulpit and stations of the cross. The confessional booth, Father Chris Posluszny noted, retained the faint whiff of shampoo and conditioner for several months.
“It was an unusual place to find ourselves,” he says. “But I think we created a cathedral feel in there.”
