Wood art is Alive and kicking...
WOOD comes to life in a summer exhibition in Sheffield. The Working Woodlands Gallery in Ecclesall Woods is staging a 'nature inspired' exhibition which includes work by local carver Russell Birch and sculptor David Frisby.
The Alive exhibition – which runs until August 16 – will also feature stone carvings by Oliver Meller and wood-fired ceramic birds by Hanne Westergaad.
Appropriately for the site, birds are a prominent theme for the exhibitiors with David Frisby's magnificent Golden Eagle perched at the top of the food chain.
The life-sized sculpture, which took over a year to make, is finely crafted from a range of different woods and bark, including the local ash and spruce used to make over 1,000 individual feathers.
Russell Birch's carvings are on an entirely different scale – but are no less detailed.
The Japanese 'Netsuke' influenced pieces may only be the size of a snooker ball, but each miniature takes hundreds of hours to make.
Birch started carving in the late 1990s, having been inspired by a photograph of a coffee table made of three carved ducks in a woodworking book, but came to specialize in Netsuke more recently.
The Working Woodlands Gallery opened the doors to its new timber-framed building last July and now showcases the work of over 80 local artists and craftspeople.
Everything is made from local timber including sculpture, furniture, turned bowls and kitchenware.
The Working Woodlands Gallery is on Abbey Lane at Ecclesall Woods Sawmill and is open 11am – 4pm, Tuesday to Sunday.
