Women victims of cruel attacks
A MAN who terrorised the women in his life with a catalogue of attacks while high on drugs has been locked up for three years by Doncaster Crown Court.
Stephen Michael Varley's rocky relationship with his girlfriend led him to vent his anger on her mother and one of her friends, landing both of them in hospital after vicious assaults with his feet and fists.
On another occasion he used a van to deliberately ram a car being driven by his partner's mum, turning it into an insurance write-off.
Michael Upson, defending, admitted the 29-year-old was "completely off the rails" in April and May of this year when he committed the offences of violence.
He admitted charges of assault against Jennifer Miller, the mother of his partner Rachel Miller, and her friend, Diane Wallace, and dangerous driving when he reversed his Ford Transit into Mrs Miller's car in Rossington, where they all live.
While awaiting trial he went to Cleethorpes and committed another offence, wounding a man with a wine bottle after he had been invited to an outdoor drinking party in a Grimsby street.
Prosecutor Megan Rhys said Mrs Miller was driving in Rossington when Varley's van came alongside her, there was an exchange of words, he overtook and then screeched to a halt and reversed into the back of her car, causing severe damage to the bodywork and windows with the impact, although she was not injured.
While on bail for the dangerous driving he visited the home of Ms Wallace, who was still recovering from giving birth to a premature baby, and demanded money that she owed him.
She gave him the money but after demanding more he punched her three times to the face. Rachel Miller witnessed the attack and described how Varley then kicked her friend "like a football" before lifting her head up and punching it again. Ms Wallace was so scared she was physically sick, said Ms Rhys.
A few days later Jennifer Miller saw Varley's car parked outside the premises where Rachel worked and the defendant saw her using her phone, wrongly assuming she was calling the police.
Mrs Miller was assaulted and lost count of the number of times she was kicked and punched by him, said Ms Rhys.
When Varley, of Mayfield Crescent, Rossington, was arrested shortly afterwards he was so agitated that he started head-butting the walls of his cell at Doncaster police station. He later blamed Jennifer Miller for putting pressure on her daughter not to see him any more.
Mr Upson said the offences were committed when Varley relapsed into using crack cocaine and heroin again after some time off drugs.
"Since he has been in custody he has tried to return to being the sort of person he was before these offences," and his relationship with Miss Miller would continue, he said.
