'We're not bothered about the curves'

"WE'D contemplated boob tubes but realised they'd come down to our knees..."

Bernie Nolan is talking stage outfits, which surely need to be a bit more modest when a girl's back 30 years on from when she started.

In 1979, the best-known sisters in pop were slender as willows. And boy, were their trousers snug.

The Nolans are a long way off support tights, sensible shoes and nice, warm cardies. But I suspect that big, hold-everything-in knickers and reinforced bras will already be on order.

Like the girls who followed their every synchronised move, they've grown outwards as well as up.

In racy red dresses for their tour promotion photo shoot, there's barely a waist to be seen. Boobs are bigger, arms are heavier... yet to my mind, they look far more glamorous than the sweet, slender-hipped goody-two-shoes they once were.

"Thanks for that," says Bernie. "It's true none of us are size zeroes," she laughs. "We have our lumps and bumps. But we've got the confidence that comes with age and with the exception of Coleen, who hasn't sung on stage for years, we are all confident that our voices are just as strong.

"But we've got to get ourselves in shape in time for when the tour starts in October. It's 25 years since we last toured, for God's sake," she laughs.

"We're not bothered about the extra curves, but we do need to get through the dance routines!"
