Walking group is Rovers fan after summer event

DONCASTER Rovers have been hailed as role models for other clubs by the Walking for Health website after it organised healthy walks.

The club's sports foundation held its first ever health walk on July 12 - the day England played the USA in the World Cup.

In total, 20 people took part, and a follow-up walk is now planned.

Using the match as a marketing ploy, the club's Junior Rovers were encouraged to wear their England shirts and bring flags along to the walk.

Mascot Donny Dog, draped in the England flag, accompanied the walkers on a simple, flat walk around the lake beside the stadium. The event finished with a training session for the juniors and a guided tour of the ground.

Walking for Health is a group which offers information, support and encouragement to complete beginners, existing walkers and health and leisure professionals.

It aims to get more people walking in their own communities particularly those who take little exercise or who live in areas of poor health.

Richard Bailey, of Doncaster Rovers' Community and Education Foundation, came up with the idea of setting the first walk on July 12 and giving it a theme.

The club has now gained Walking for Health accreditation.

Richard said: "I was pleased with the turnout. We definitely reached people who wouldn't otherwise go on a health walk."
