Baby T Rex is a life size puppet, operated by a man cleverly hidden inside a heavy dino body suit.

But mother T-Rex is something else – a 23ft tall and 42ft long robot, weighing the equivalent of a family car, with three men controlling here every terrifying move.

These are the ultimate toys for boys. But you'll not find any this big in Toys R Us and you couldn't afford one anyway. The biggest beauties are one-offs, built for the show at a staggering cost of around one million dollars each.

The Baby T turned up at Sheffield Arena's Box Office to promote the show and scare the living daylights out of pupils, who were invited along for a sneak preview, from Phillmore Community Primary School.

As it lurched towards them, snapping its teeth, swishing its tail from side to side and sending out a shrilling, which sent chills down the spine, the children screamed, jumped back and laughed at the same time.

Alli Coyne, the resident touring director, assured families the show won't scare kids to death.

"Definitely not. That's not our intention at all,'' she said, as the young T-Rex playfully attacked her at the box office at Sheffield Arena.

"We want to present them correctly. It's not a cute image of them. But we wouldn't set out to frighten anybody.

"The reaction they are getting is absolutely amazing. It's that mix of being apprehensive but at the same time loving every minute of it. A bit like being on a rollercoaster.

"It's an entertainment spectacular. We take people through the passage of time when dinosaurs were on the Earth."

The 96-minute show, a mix of thrills and education, tells how carnivorous dinosaurs evolved to walk on two legs, and how the herbivores fended off their more agile predators. It also looks at climatic and tectonic changes which led to their extinction.

* Tickets for the Sheffield Arena show, may be subject to a booking fee, are 35, 30 & 20 - with a limited number of premium seats available at 45. Call Sheffield Arena Box Office on 0114 256 56 56 or buy on line at sheffieldarena.co.uk
