Van in river sparks rescue operation
A MAJOR rescue operation was launched this morning after a van was spotted submerged in the River Don near Barnby Dun.
The vehicle's lights and radio were still switched on and emergency services were concerned people may have been trapped inside.
But a check by firefighters after the van was pulled up the river bank off Marsh Lane at Thorpe Bank established it was empty.
The crews were continuing their search along the river to ensure there were no occupants in the water.
Police were carrying out enquiries to establish if the van was stolen and had been deliberately dumped in the Don or if it had accidentally gone into the water.
Barriers near the scene were damaged where the van had gone through them.
Marsh Lane from Almholme Lane was closed for the operation.
