University centre degree courses boom
RECORD numbers of Doncaster students have signed up for degree programmes at the borough's university centre this year.
In total, 337 new students from the borough have signed up to study at University Centre Doncaster, operated by Doncaster College. They add to 452 locals who will be continuing studies there.
This year has seen the centre's higher education learner figures rise by around 10 per cent compared to this time last year.
University Centre Doncaster has surveyed incoming students who say the main benefits of studying while living at home are less stress, social and networking benefits and cost savings.
Bosses at Doncaster College say the growth in numbers is good news for the High Melton-based University Centre which has plans to develop significantly. The organisation is taking part in the Government's University Challenge scheme to increase the university presence in the borough.
Antony Pawlett, working on the scheme for the college, said: "Local people don't get the full range of opportunities here that there are in other places. Quality at the University Centre is very good and receiving praise from Government inspectors, but without the resources of a University, there are limits to what can be offered. If the project is successful there would be a big boost in prosperity, jobs and income for the town.
"Central Government has put money up to 'unlock the potential' of people that don't currently get the opportunity to reach their highest potential. The benefits of higher level study include earning more, being happier and even living longer. Research shows that Doncaster people are missing out more than most."
Bursaries have been set up to help local students with limited finances, worth 400 a year and available to people coming from any secondary school in Doncaster, from Dearne Valley College or Doncaster College.
