Tributes to singing star Sam
LOCAL showbiz is mourning the death of Sam Sorono, the Filipino singer and Tom Jones impersonator who was a hit in the first series of Stars in the Eyes in 1991.
Sam, who lived in Bramley, Rotherham, died last Sunday in Rotherham Hospice aged 58.
"He was a brilliant all round entertainer, a club filler," says his pal, comic Jimmy Carol.
Sam rocketed to fame in the early Nineties because of the show and went on to be the first act to appear on the Spanish version of Stars in the Eyes.
By then, he had already made seven films in Hong Kong, where he was also revered as a sixth dan in Korean Martial Arts.
While in the Phillipines, entertaining US troops, he played with acts such as Count Basie and Ike and Tina Turner.
Sam, father of Samantha and Sam Junior, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in October 2006, which by then had invaded his whole body.
He went to Tenerife to live and perform in March. "It was something he always wanted to do. He wanted to conquer Tenerife. His voice did but his body couldn't comply," says his widow Michelle.
The funeral is at Rotherham Crematorium on Tuesday.
