Toxic fumes scare forces museum to close to public

DONCASTER Museum has been closed to the public after a toxic scare.

The Chequer Road premises were shut earlier this week after a delivery of oil for the heating system, which was giving off fumes.

As a precautionary measure Doncaster Council is conducting air-sampling tests and the museum will only reopen once tests confirm it is safe to do so.

Director of Neighbours and Communities Jane Miller said: "Unfortunately we have had to close Doncaster Museum temporarily for unforeseen maintenance issues.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will have the museum back open as soon as possible."

The closure has meant the cancellation of a special medieval-themed event tomorrow.

People who have booked tickets for the Hell, Bells and Smells event, which was to include an illustrated medieval talk before a tour around the museum to look at a wealth of artefacts excavated over the years in and around the borough, will be able to claim refunds.
