Tourist time as Mayor stands in at information centre

MAYOR Peter Davies joined staff at Doncaster's tourist information office in a bid to welcome visitors arriving in the borough for the St Leger Festival.

He joined them at the desk at the Blue Building, High Street, for 30 minutes over Monday lunchtime to give tourists his own views on what was on offer.

This year has seen an extended festival week, which started on Friday and carried on over the weekend with the Doncaster Live event in the Market Place, which featured the indie rockers Terrorvision. It had been put back from its usual July slot to Leger week.

Other events marking race week include beer festivals, funfairs, and an exhibitions on the history of the St Leger at Doncaster Museum.

Today sees the action start on the racecourse at Town Moor, starting with the first day's racing of the Leger meeting. It continues with Ladies Day tomorrow, the fashion high point of the festival which sees women dress up in their finest outfits.

The Doncaster Cup day is on Friday, and the main St Leger race is on Saturday.
