Tory duo in talks on road congestion
SHADOW transport minster Stephen Hammond has visited Doncaster to discuss congestion issues with the borough's Tory mayoral candidate.
Conservative Mr Hammond visited Doncaster to look at various sites in the borough and talked about what could be done to relieve traffic problems with Coun Jonathan Wood. Both have said they fully support plans to improve White Rose Way and create a new road link to the airport from the M18.
The Yorkshire Regional Transport Board backed both schemes as priorities for the region earlier this month, in a move which supported by Doncaster's four MPs Jeff Ennis, Caroline Flint, Ed Miliband and Rosie Winterton.
Doncaster Council has said in the past it hoped for work to start on the airport link road - called the Finningley and Rossington Relief Route Scheme - in 2013.
Among the sites visited by Coun Wood and Mr Hammond was the North Bridge, behind the Frenchgate Centre, which is closed to cars, but Mr Hammond believes appears to be underused by buses.
He said: "One creative way to alleviate congestion is to open bus lanes to cars during certain hours of the day, and there are a number of other options worth exploring."
