Topping off a dainty dish to set before the king... or rather the Princess Royal
DONCASTER catering students Rhiannon Willson and Charlene Singh will show off their new pie filling to royalty after winning a competition.
The duo will whip up a garam masala pie for the Princess Royal when she visits The Topping Pie Company on Monday, December 8.
The pair beat off competition from fellow students on Doncaster College's hospitality and catering course to create the unusual filling as part of National Enterprise Week.
Rhiannon said: "We were in the supermarket looking at herbs and spices and thought about this - within half an hour or so we had come up with the recipe."
Charlene added: "I can't believe we won the competition, there were a lot of good pie fillings and they all looked lovely."
Runner-up was James Lindley-Brown and Gary Maxfield's Sunday Dinner pie.
Other fillings included Thyme, Beef and Red Wine; Creamy Thai and Spanish Empanada.
Lynda Povey, general manager at The Topping Pie Company, said: "There are a lot of very talented young catering students at the college and the challenge unleashed some enterprising and innovative ideas."
Course director Jane Fishwick said: "The collaboration with The Topping Pie Company has really encouraged enterprising and creative qualities in our students, as well as enhancing learning and motivating them to create the perfect pie.
"All our students were incredibly enthusiastic about the challenge and it was a difficult job to select the final winner."
