Tony's artwork becomes a benchmark for course

IT may look like a broken park bench - but this is part of the latest wave of art to come out of Doncaster.

The newest generation of artists from Doncaster College are showing off their masterpieces at sites across the borough.

One of the more eye catching works on show is the bench created by Conisbrough student Tony Surtees.

It is currently attracting the attention of visitors at the college's main Hub, on Doncaster Waterfront.

His work, titled They Sleep In Beds They Never Made, is one of many to have drawn praise from arts lecturers at the college.

But not every arts student at the college is an aspiring Damian Hurst or Tracy Emin and many of those involved in the exhibitions have created practical art.

And while Tony's bench may not be the most comfortable place to sit, fellow student Alice Kett-Farrington's main creation certainly is.

Her work, created for her combined design course, is a custom build chair made of used corrugated cardboard, laminated together and titled Kidney Chaise.

The 25 year old from Scawsby said: "The used cardboard gives it a recycled theme. It's strong enough to sit on so that is exactly what some of the show's visitors have done.

"My focus is on furniture design and sustainable pieces, and I've had some good feedback from the people visiting the show so far.

"I think it is really comfortable to sit on and I would certainly have it in my front room."

For some exhibiting at the college shows their displays could be the way into a job.

Industry experts are among those who have been taking in the displays at High Melton, said visual communication and graphic design course leader Simon Gomes.

He added: "We've had a lot of friends and family round," he said.

"We'd love to see people coming off the street to see the work, and I think that goes for all of the exhibitions on at the moment."

Three end-of-year shows are taking place at the college's two main campuses – The Hub and High Melton – showcasing the town's best up and coming talent.

Work from animation degree students is on show in The Hub's Learning Resource Centre at Doncaster Waterfront and an exhibition by the college's fine art and craft degree students has been set up in the drama theatre.

Meanwhile, the college's High Melton site is running an exhibition of work by the visual communications students.

Fashion and design students will be showing off their creations in Church House and the Cream Gallery.

All exhibitions will be open to the public until Thursday, June 12.

A Doncaster College spokesma n said: "These shows are the culmination of some very hard work by our arts students. It just shows how much talent the young people of Doncaster possess.

The exhibitions are definitely worth a look."
